Why I’m asking for your support
What is an audio drama, scripted podcast, or fictional podcast series - they are all the same thing. Plan and simple an audio drama is a movie with no visuals - just sound.
Have you ever closed your eyes while watching a movie or tv and just listened to what was going on? Were you able to imagine what was going on in the scene? That’s pretty much what an audio drama is. A movie or TV show without visual stimulation.
That’s what I created with Alpha 8, a sci-fi immersive adventure that you can listen to alone or enjoy with your kids.
It all started in February 2021. I decided I can do more than just listen to audio dramas, I can create one! And it’s a great way to “hear” my words as a produced being instead of just on the page.
So I adapted my award-winning feature screenplay. I spent eight months transforming the story into a series that can be heard instead of watched. I changed the POV of the story, focusing more on the struggles and doubts moms face every day, in a fun and totally sci-fi way!
And that work paid off because the script was a finalist in the Shore Scripts Fiction Podcast Competition and was a 2nd Rounder at the Austin Film Festival. I’m a visual thinker, learner, and writer, so it was challenging to switch mediums.
I’m a visual person, my goal is to create an immersive experience for the listener so they could actually “visualize” the story. And my interpretation of an audio drama is a movie without visuals. So it still includes a full cast, sound effects, energy, and excitement - just like a movie.
This summer, I funded and produced the pilot episode for the series. I started casting and found some amazing artists to help bring this story to life. It was important to me to hire SAG actors for the series. Due to COVID restrictions, we recorded remotely in two group sessions. I spent the next four months editing and working with my sound designer to complete the pilot.
It was important to me to include a diverse cast and crew for the show and I’ve done that successfully. I’m asking for your support to complete season one of the series. If we are able to reach our funding goal I will be able to bring in additional writers for the show to not only support the audio drama community but to also support other voices of color.
